Assessment Instruments
This section is designed to provide clinicians and researchers with descriptive,
reference, and contact information about child and adult measures of trauma
exposure and responses. Information for the public on how to assess PTSD please
use this link.
Measures included in these pages are those with published psychometric studies and those that are widely used or are innovative.
Information is reported in tables such as time to administer, published psychometrics,
and number of items. Click on any title for more information. The five categories of instruments are:
Information is availble on a 4-item screen developed for use in Primary Care.
More information is available about the
assessment instruments developed by the National Center for PTSD, including how to obtain those instruments. More information on child measures can be obtained at the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.
Instruments most commonly cited in the PILOTS database are listed, for those who wish to know which assessment instruments are most frequently utilized in trauma research. Researchers and clinicians should note that frequency of citation may indicate longevity of a measure rather than current "popularity." A low frequency of citation is not significant in very recent publications. Some older measures may not be suitable for all assessment purposes, so careful attention to the characteristics of a measure and the intended use is advised.
More information is available for those interested in searching for assessment measure citations in the PILOTS database.
